Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. You may still feel tired when you wake up. Most cases of insomnia are related to poor sleeping habits, depression, anxiety, lack of exercise, chronic illness or certain medication. Symptoms may include difficulty falling or staying asleep and not feeling well-rested. About half of those with insomnia sleep a normal amount, or at least six hours a night. In one study, about 42% of people with insomnia who slept a normal amount underestimated how much they slept on a particular night by more than an hour. Treatment for insomnia consists of improving sleep habits, behavior therapy and identifying and treating underlying causes.
